How to Choose a Contractor

Guidelines for Making an Informed Decision

Choosing the right home builder or remodeler to work on your home can be a daunting challenge. Here are some basic rules to help you make the best choice.

Make sure that your contractor…

  1. Is Full-Time: It may sound simple, but is the person or company you’re considering a full-time residential construction expert? In today’s economy, people are trying out new jobs, moonlighting, etc. Make sure the company you hire to work on your home is an established, full-time residential construction business.
  2. Has an Office: Make sure the company you’re considering has an office you can visit. Be extremely cautious about someone who works solely out of their garage or truck.
  3. Is Insured: A properly and fully-insured builder will provide you with a higher level of security and on-the-job protection should the unexpected happen. Hiring someone who doesn’t have the proper insurance puts you, your home, and your family at risk.
  4. Has a Guarantee: Does the company guarantee their work? If they’re not willing to stand behind what they do, why should you hire them?
  5. Can Provide Testimonials & References: High-quality builders have clients who say good things about them. Make sure the company you’re considering can provide you with testimonials and references from current or former clients. If they are unable to provide you with testimonials, that should be a red flag.
  6. Has Received Awards and/or Industry Recognition: Outstanding work gets recognized. If the builder you’re considering can’t demonstrate their excellence through awards and industry recognition, they may not be the best choice for your dream home.
